Dragons and Aliens and Free Stuff Oh My! QuakeCon 2011 News

Well QuakeCon has come and gone. There were winners, losers, and of course, awesome news. So lets take a look at some of the highlights from these 4 days of “Peace, Love, and Rockets”.

First up on the stage was Todd Hollenshead who announced that Rage iOs will be free for a week as soon as id’s Facebook page reaches 100K likes. Gotta love freebies.  Also Tim Willits confirmed modding tools will be available and supported in Rage (not Rage iOs).

I Wonder How You Say "Badass" in Dragon?

Besides showing a 45 min demo of Skyrim, which you can read about here, the Collector’s Edition was also revealed. This version of the game will retail for $149.99 US, €149.99 EU, £129.99 UK, and $199.99 Australian (ouch), and include a 12” tall statue of Alduin, the World Eater on top of a dragon wall, Official 200 page Art Book, and Making-Of DVD. Plus if you pre-order you get a faux-burlap map of the game world (woot). Also, it was confirmed by Bethesda that Skyrim will come with out-of-the-box modding tools. So put on your +10 awesome armor and get your sword ready because The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim hits the shelves November 11, 2011 for PC, 360, and PS3.

Boom Shakalaka

QuakeCon goers got to watch a live Prey 2 demo played by Human Head’s co-founder Chris Reinhart (which you can read about here), which revealed a few new weapons, such as a shoulder mounted rocket launcher and gravity grenades. Also, a few new screenshots were released, such as this one below.

Slutty Holograms, Gigidy Gigidy

Bethesda showed off more screenshots of Arkane Studios (Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Bioshock 2) new IP (YAY) Dishonored. Why should you be excited about Dishonored? Well, besides the fact that it is a new IP in a sea of sequels and remakes, the talent behind this project is amazing.

Who is bringing this steampunk, Orwellian, City 17, Nineteen Eighty-Four feeling first-person shooter stealth action title to life? Why none other than Harvey Smith and Viktor Antonov of course. Who is that you ask? Harvey Smith was a game designer for greats such as System Shock, Deus Ex, and Thief: Deadly Shadows while Viktor Antonov had a big part in bringing Half-Life 2 to life as art director and conceptual artist (you can check out some of his work here).

Also, according to an article in GameInformer, every enemy in the game can be neutralized non-lethally,if the player so chooses. Lead designer Harvey Smith also described the game world as a “simulation”; if the player sees an innocent citizen being attacked by a gang, they can fight them off, however, the thugs existed in the game world before the mugging instead of just spawning at the designated time or place. If the player found the gang and killed them earlier, the mugging never would have taken place.

Ooh, Shiny

A public demo of  Hi-Rez Studios Tribes: Ascend was shown off at QuakeCon this year. This new Tribes is going to be multiplayer only and supported through micro-transactions just like Team Fortress 2/League of Legends, aka, its FREE!!! Jetpacks and skiing will return as well as loadouts, such as Light, Medium, and Heavy. However, players must either pay upfront for their loadouts or earn them in game. Unfortunately, user-hosted servers are being replaced by  Hi-Rez Studios hosted servers. Be looking forward to Tribes: Ascend sometime late 2011 for the PC. It was stated that Tribes: Ascend will be released later on XBLA and possibly other consoles.

There he is. Gaming Jesus.

Then the man himself, John Carmack, took the stage to deliver his annual keynote speech (which you can watch in its extreamly long entirety below). Some of the best news delivered by Carmack was that Doom 4 is in full production and as soon as Rage ships, the entire team will be working on it, the Doom 3 source code would be released for free by the end of the year, and iD Tech 4 will be open source hopefully at the release of Rage.
