Freddy Krueger. Really?
Well, the newest and last DLC character announced for Mortal Kombat 9 just so happens to be Freddy Krueger. I know right, who didn’t see that one coming? Even though Freddy’s trademark claws fit into the MK universe, does he? Lets take a look into the decision to include this dream invading freak.
Now throughout the years the Mortal Kombat franchise has had some pretty crazy stuff in it. Be it the over the top Fatalities (Liu Kangs arcade drop anyone?), Babalities, doing an Animality to turn into a giant scorpion to finish off your opponent, or even Noob Saibot’s name (which is just the last names of creators Ed Boon and John Tobias reversed) for example. But why Freddy you ask?
According to an interview with Ed Boon by Playstation.Blog, the idea of Freddy Krueger appearing in a Mortal Kombat game isn’t a new, random idea.
|“PlayStation.Blog: Ten, 15 years ago when Mortal Kombat was early in its lifespan, did you ever fantasize about getting Freddy Krueger into MK?Boon:Yeah, yeah. Over the years, we’ve certainly had a number of conversations about guest characters. At one point, we had a conversation about having a group — imagine Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre — of all these killers from the 80s and 90s flicks come in as a group of characters”.
So, it seems the idea of having a lot of guest fighters join the Mortal Kombat universe could be getting thrown around. Could this be a hint at a possible future game? Could it be more than just 80s and 90s killers? Only time can tell, but we have our ideas. And be looking forward to swinging your claws and invading dreams as Freddy Krueger on August 9, 2011.
